That’s the problem with the Brits. “Number ones”; “number twos”; “front bottoms”. In private we are among the most vulgar in Europe, if not the world. But our public face is so very different. Just consider how recently adverts for “sanitary towels” and the like first appeared on TV in these islands, and how oblique the references to menstruation continue to be.
