Are we more polite today?

She may be right on the subject of race and class, but Judith Martin (aka “Miss Manners”) has in the past displayed crass ignorance and discourtesy in insisting that only medical practitioners may use the title “Dr”. They must be addressed as such at all times, she says, even by their spouses while in-coitus. OK, I made the last bit up, but this is a blog, after all.

If we are going to be all prim and proper about this, Medical “doctors” should not be addressed as “Dr” unless they possess either an MD degree with a substantial research component, or a PhD in addition to their clinical qualification. So there!

Judith Martin is an excruciating rude person, and a tremendous bore. I really don’t know what the world’s coming to. Still, it could be worse; if an official in Denmark wishes to attract your attention, they grunt in your general direction. Welcome to the Jantelovlig Kingdom of Egalitaria.

There, that’s my harrumph for the day.
