John Martyn lays his head down

Back in February of last year I misheard a radio news broadcast while driving, and in my head put together a short obituary of John Martyn, one of my all-time favourite musicians.

Martyn had not died, but rather been given a lifetime achievement award.

The sad news today is that John Martyn has now passed away, aged 60. I repeat what I wrote last year about this extraordinary character:

“John Martyn is one of my all-time favourite musicians. I first started listening to his stuff in the late 1970s, at the time I started smoking weed and doing other stuff frowned upon by bourgeois society. Martyn’s music has had an enormous and positive influence on me, and is now burned indelibly into my neural network.”

The world is a poorer place for his passing.
