This was cool…
The clip comes from a BBC documentary broadcast yesterday on the musical phenomenon that was/is Krautrock. I misspent my youth listening to this stuff, and it was a delight to see and hear my now aging musical heroes as they are today, still creatively pursuing their art.
Krautrock may have been influential in popular culture, but to subtitle it as “The Rebirth of Germany” is a little hyperbolic. Iggy Pop’s take on the genre is interesting, if a little flowery.
The music playing in the background is Hallogallo, from Neu!‘s eponymous debut album. Talking about his love of water is Hamburger (oder Fischkopf) Michael Rother, who co-founded Neu! with the late Klaus Dinger following their departure from Kraftwerk in the early 1970s.
Also broadcast last night was a compilation of recent live performances by Kraftwerk, which opened with a well funky performance of The Man Machine…
