Relative receptions in Copenhagen

Earlier this week, Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez stole the show in Copenhagen with a tub-thumping speech which ran 20 minutes beyond the allotted five, and blamed the world’s climate ills on “capitalism” and “US imperialism”. I understand that many of those in attendance went into paroxysms of ecstasy on hearing the words of the global oil trader and self-styled revolutionary socialist, following which they rushed forward to pay homage and touch hem.

This morning, by way of contrast, Bazza the Great flew in on his winged chariot, made a blinder of a speech containing more substance than rhetoric, and was received with muted applause.

That leaves Gordon Brown to save the world.
