What splendid news, Chinese intellectual Liu Xiaobo winning this year’s Nobel Peace Prize!
China’s status as an emerging superpower "must entail increased responsibility", says the Norwegian Nobel Committee president Thorbjørn Jagland.
“China is in breach of several international agreements to which it is a signatory, as well as of its own provisions concerning political rights.”
“The campaign to establish universal human rights in China is being waged by many Chinese, both in China itself and abroad. Through the severe punishment meted out to him, Liu has become the foremost symbol of this wide-ranging struggle for human rights in China."
Liu Xiaobo, who drafted the democracy manifesto Charter 08, is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence for being a pain in the arse of the Chinese state. Long may he continue to be so.
