Science funding cuts

Just for the record, I have nothing to say about anticipated cuts in state funding for science and engineering research in the UK, about which we will know nothing until later this month when the government’s comprehensive spending review is made public. Nor have I anything to say about a report from the research councils that has yet to be published, but which today we are teasingly informed will argue that a £1 billion cut in research funding would lead to a £10 billion fall in Britain’s gross domestic product.

Pardon me if for the moment I refrain from issuing a hue and cry and stamping my feet in regard of a matter about which neither you nor I have any hard information. Call me a pedant or worse if you will, but I have a predilection for evidence-based politics.

I am reliably informed that Dr Vince Cable is 67.
