Here are a few photos from last Sunday’s Molly dance and Mummers play, held outside the Dog & Bell pub in Deptford, south London. Thus began the local yuletide celebrations.
Bitterly cold day… compact camera… shaky hands.
The Molly dancers – part of the world renowned Fowlers Troop & Deptford Jack in the Green – are regular features on this blog. The young people presenting their version of the traditional Mummers play are strolling players based at the University of Greenwich. In the third picture above you can see the youthful actors performing a Morris dance.
Blackheath Morris and Fowlers Molly will be touring the taverns of Blackheath on Boxing Day. Time is a malleable concept for the Blackheath Morris Men, but the dancers should begin shifting their feet and beer bellies at around 13:00, outside the Princess of Wales pub by the pond.
