Thank God for Wills and Kate!

Republic reports a surge in support for the pro-modernity cause following the announcement in November of the royal wedding. Fourteen thousand may not be enough foot soldiers to topple the monarchy, but such rapid growth is nevertheless impressive.

Britain’s republicans will be celebrating on 29 April, the date of Will-and-Kate’s nuptuals, with an alternative street party in central London to “celebrate democracy and people-power rather than inherited privilege”. A creative idea, certainly, but it looks as if the people of these benighted isles are indifferent to the wedding of the chopper-flying chinless wonder and his commoner crumpet, and may wonder what all the fuss is about when they see the model guillotine.
