Dublin for the abstemious

Along with today’s celebration of Georgian soft porn, we have news that an Irish software engineer has solved one of James Joyce’s famous riddles…

“Good puzzle would be cross Dublin without passing a pub.” [Leopold Bloom, Ulysses]

Dublin without a single pub
With the aid of openstreetmap.org and a nifty algorithmic creation, Dubliner Rory McCann plotted a course through the city from the North Circular Road at Blackhorse Avenue to the canal at Baggot Street. McCann’s route manages to avoid every pub along the way.

“It’s something that a lot of people have been wondering about in Dublin, and a lot of people have been cynically pointing out I’ve ruined a great pub conversation.”

Maybe so, but there is no shortage of riddles in Joyce’s writing to be getting on with.
