Of gongs and sewers

Buried at the bottom of a report of Apple design chief Jonathan Ive’s knighthood – a deserved honour, given the creative output of the man who has given the world iThings aplenty – is a reference to another tapping of sword upon shoulders in Brenda’s Gaff yesterday. This was for Peter Bazalgette, the television producer responsible for Big Brother, Ready Steady Cook, Changing Rooms and Ground Force.

Big gongs have been awarded for far lesser achievements, so one shouldn’t begrudge this one, but it would seem that Peter Bazalgette’s knighthood is in the family. The newly arisen Sir Peter is the great-great-grandson of Sir Joseph Bazalgette, the civil engineer behind London’s sewer system.

Big Brother and sanitation – an interesting comparison on so many levels.
