Pax Europaea

Maybe they did it to spite the Daily Mail, but then again, does anyone really give a toss what is printed in that parochial rag bar a couple of million lumpen Brits, and the odd Kraut with a warped, schadenfreudliche sense of humour? I refer to the award by the Norwegian Nobel Committee of the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize to a 27-nation trading block and aspirant multinational state which is currently facing a few minor economic and social problems.

Still, the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union is based on its undoubted success in preventing war between habitually bickering neighbours, and the fostering of liberal democracy on the continent of Europe. Not bad. I’d give the EU a score of 7/10, and a “significant room for improvement” entry on its record card.
