Terribly sad news from the United States: the great composer Elliott Carter is no more.
Carter displayed the compositional edge of his mentor Nadia Boulanger, but unlike the latter could write a decent tune, in stark contrast to the then fashionable fixation with post-neoclassical atonal wibbling. He also had an ear for what was going on around him. Carter was heavily influenced by European music, but he remained at heart an American composer.
