Inciting hatred of transsexual and transgendered people is a criminal offence

Following my complaint yesterday about Guardian columnist Suzanne Moore, today we have a contribution from Moore’s friend Julie Burchill, a Guardian and Observer regular, and journalist of considerable talent and experience. Burchill’s latest Observer piece is guaranteed to cause mass wailing and gnashing of teeth as the day progresses. And for good reason, as it ranks among the most vile writing published in a mainstream British periodical of note.

Burchill’s über-macho polemic has left me in tears. Her rant is so hate-filled that, were it directed at black people, gays, lesbians or Jews, no respectable periodical would touch it with a bargepole. Yet an article which displays intense loathing for transsexual and transgendered people…

“…a bunch of dicks in chicks’ clothing… rather argue over semantics. To be fair, after having one’s nuts taken off (see what I did there?) by endless decades in academia, it’s all most of them are fit to do… they’re lucky I’m not calling them shemales. Or shims… we are damned if we are going to be accused of being privileged by a bunch of bed-wetters in bad wigs… have your cock cut off and then plead special privileges as women – above natural-born women… Shims, shemales, whatever you’re calling yourselves these days – don’t threaten or bully us lowly natural-born women, I warn you… You really won’t like us when we’re angry…”

…is considered acceptable for publication by the Guardian Media Group. Whilst causing offence is not in itself a hate crime, Burchill’s writing, and to a lesser extent that of Suzanne Moore and her Guardian colleague Julie Bindel, is designed to provoke others into publicly voicing similar views. As such it is incitement to hate transsexual and transgendered people, and that is why I have reported it to the Metropolitan Police as a hate crime.

Maybe this is all part of the Guardian Media Group’s latest business model: its plan to save Britain’s premier liberal-left news and comment periodicals from the financial black hole into which they are rapidly being sucked. Now teetering on the event horizon, the company has no more than a few years of capital reserves remaining. It is offloading news reporters while holding onto star columnists, and encouraging the latter to ever greater heights of hyperbole and absurdity.

All that remains of the once proud Manchester Guardian is a moral and political cesspit. It is getting to the stage where I may in future refrain from directly linking to Guardian articles. Political fuckwittery is one thing, but demonising vulnerable individuals and social groups is quite another.

I am neither transsexual nor transgendered, but my family circumstances are such that with this hate speech I feel threatened by association.
