Where: Locks, Docks & One Smoking Ferry afterworker
When: Thursday 3 April 2014
Meet: 18:30 @ Cutty Sark Gardens, SE10 9LW (by the foot tunnel entrance)
Spring has sprung, so it’s time for some mid-week afterworker rides. My first for 2014 will be a variation on the late Barry Mason’s Locks, Docks and One Smoking Ferry ride. Only 45 kilometres or thereabouts (225 furlongs).
Starting at Cutty Sark Gardens in Greenwich, we cycle east along the Thames Path to Woolwich, and take the ferry across the river. From there it’s along the Albert Dock and Thames Path northside to Trinity Buoy Wharf, and then continue along the Thames Path to Shadwell.
After Shadwell Basin we follow the ornamental canals to Wapping High Street, and then it’s back to the river at St Katharine’s Dock. Crossing north to south over Tower Bridge, we then ride along the Thames Path southside through Southwark and the Lewisham Riviera, stopping for a pint at the Dog & Bell in Deptford.
Bring lights, tools, puncture repair materials and a spare inner tube or two. The ride terrain is almost all flat, and the pace will be moderate. Dusk views over the Thames can be stunning, as can the city lights of the Great Wen as viewed from the east.
RSVP, but it’s OK to turn up unannounced on the day.
